It's a perfectly reasonable and polite request from the other mum. Myleene could have just said no or given less or bought something else.
Not sure why she feels she has to try and publicly humiliate the poor woman.

I don't care what she did or didn't say or do, nor if she's right or wrong. I'm sometimes not wild about her selection of music on Classic FM. Nor does that matter a jot. I don't consider myself shallow but she can do what she likes, when she likes, preferably while taking a shower.

I think this sort of thing just absolves parents of bothering to pay the slightest attention to their children's friends and what they like. My approach was to get my kids to tell me a bit about their friends, then we'd go and choose a present AS A FAMILY, giving the required amount of time to discussing things and changing our minds as we went along if we saw and agreed on something more suitable.
The old slip an Ayrton in the card was generally a last resort - I'm not saying I NEVER did it, but I always wanted to apologise to both the kid and his/her parents for not making/finding the time - kids appreciate time being spent on them, even if they don't actually see it being spent.
And it's what the kid thinks that matters most, isn't it?
